(Set a cone (^) for the player (X) to place throwing side foot on. Using ATEC?s Rookie machine (Y) set up at home plate, direct ground balls to the forehand side of the player. Begin with slower balls, and have the player attempt fielding moving forward toward the balls. Then increase the speed, teaching the proper angle to attack to insure maximum range and success. Progress each drill, by increasing the speed, changing ball types, and adding the throw into the drill.)

DEFENSIVE (Rookie)
Purpose:
The ability to keep a runner on first or stopped at third on a ball that is hit down the line or in the gap can save runs throughout the season. Teaching players to spin and throw instead of gathering themselves and setting up make a throw will cut down on runners advancing the extra base.Execution:

Align your players in left field and set up your machine so that you can shoot ground balls down the line and then in the left/center gap. In the first round shoot the grounders down the line so that the players learn to take the proper angle to cut off the ball, and set themselves and make a strong throw for a right-handed thrower, or cut the ball off and use the spin, left-handed throwers, to set themselves up for the throw. Next shoot the ball to the gap so that the left-handed throwers and work on the set and throw and the right-handed throwers can work on the spin and throw. In the drill have one player from the line act as the cut-off and have the line rotate through this position. Another variation of the drill is that the group divides into two groups leftfield and centerfield, shoot the grounder between the two groups and have the players communicate who?s momentum is going toward the subject base be the one who takes the ball and executes the throw.
