  • First Base Pick Drill

    DEFENSIVE  (Rookie)

    Purpose:
Improve your first baseman?s ability to pick errant throws and balls in the dirt

    Execution:

Have first base begin drill with Rookie 15 ft from 1st base. Deliver well thrown balls at a moderate speed, progress to balls in the dirt to the left and right. Move machine back to 40 ft or more. Continue using SFT, until the player advances skill levels. Throw both good and difficult throws. Once player is ready, change to real or dimpled balls, and increase the speed, and execute all throw type, on target, short hops and the dreaded long hop.

  • Catchers Pop Ups and Wild Pitches

    DEFENSIVE  (Rookie)

    Purpose:
To work on the catcher?s ability to recognize, track and catch foul balls. These are must have outs, but some of the hardest balls to catch.

    Execution:

Set the machine to the side of the catcher and aim straight up. Based on preferred method (helmet on or off), have catcher respond to the sound of the ball exiting the machine. By using reaction versus anticipation the players will develop better auditory and awareness skills as well as becoming comfortable moving quickly while looking up. For passed balls, set machine to throw wild pitches such as high and away. Have player in position to receive ball, without mask on at first. Players need to learn to see and find balls with full vision. After a few attempts, attempt drill with mask on. Due to limited vision, the player will now have to learn to direct their eyes and head to the ball and not attempt to use peripheral vision. Players will begin to be able to locate balls quicker avoiding the extra base to be taken.
